Dealing With Bleeding Gums? Bad Breath? Gum Recession?

Conservative Therapies for Periodontal Disease

Dr. Khaimov’s practice provides a variety of surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary.

Many times, the early stages of periodontal disease are best treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy. Even in severe cases, non-surgical periodontal therapy often precedes surgical therapy. This is done to improve the overall tissue quality prior to surgery and also to help limit the areas requiring surgery.

  • Treat Gum Disease As Early As Possible

“One out of every two Americans over 30 years of age has periodontitis, the advanced form of periodontal disease.” – CDC

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and can be treated with early intervention. If you have swollen gums or gums that bleed easily, there is a good chance it is gingivitis. If you ignore these symptoms and continue on with your daily life, the problem can develop into periodontitis which means the gums and bone are at risk of being destroyed. At this stage, you might see pockets forming around the root of the tooth and you might have chronic bad breath.

Prophylaxis (teeth cleaning)

A dental prophylaxis is a cleaning treatment performed to thoroughly clean the teeth and gums. Prophylaxis is an important dental treatment for stopping the progression of gingivitis and gum disease.

The benefits include:

Plaque removal - Tartar and plaque buildup, both above and below the gum line, can result in serious periodontal problems.

A healthier looking smile - Stained and yellowed teeth can dramatically decrease the aesthetics of a smile.

Fresher breath - Bad breath is generally indicative of advancing periodontal disease.

Scaling and Root Planning

A nonsurgical procedure that involves scraping away tartar and plaque buildup, clearing out the infection and polishing the teeth. Can reduce pocket depth by a few millimeters with proper aftercare. Ideal for patients with mild to moderate gum disease.

If treatment is successful, scaling and planing may have many periodontal benefits. Helps prevent against disease, protection against tooth loss. When gum pockets exceed 3mm in depth, the risk for periodontal disease increases. As pockets deepen, more bacteria are able to colonize, eventually causing a chronic inflammatory response by the body to destroy gingival and bone tissue. This leads to tooth loss.

Finally, scaling and root planing may make the mouth more aesthetically pleasing, and should reduce bad breath caused from food particles and bacteria in the oral cavity. Superficial stains on the teeth will be removed during scaling and planing, adding an extra bonus to the procedures.

Reduction Surgery

Osseous Surgery · Gingivectomy

Osseous surgery, sometimes referred to as pocket reduction surgery or gingivectomy, refers to a number of different surgeries aimed at gaining access to the tooth roots to remove tartar and disease-causing bacteria.

Benefits of Reduction Surgery include: reducing bacterial spread, preventing bone loss, enhancing smile, allowing for easy, every day home care.
